CEPHALOPOD FUN FACTS

CEPHALOPOD FUN FACTS

Hello Intrepid Lovers of the Amazing Cephalopod!

We are very excited to get the Cephaloporium up on its feet and out in the world celebrating the most amazing creatures we have on this wacky planet of ours. In addition to our product line, we hope to be a source of inspiration for all things Ceph! (Just in case you need a short version of the word).

To get us started how about a few great facts about our tentacled friends:

1) Cephalopods are older than dinosaurs, appearing in fossil records 500 million years ago. TAKE THAT VELOCIRAPTORS!

2) There are around 800 living species of cephalopod. Amateur fossil hunters frequently find extinct species, such as ammonites.

3) Even though color blind, most cephalopods can camouflage themselves with the surrounding environment. They do so using chromatophores, pigment-containing and light-reflecting organelles found in their cells. These change color by expanding or contracting. They can change color AND texture. INSANE!

4) The word cephalopod means "head foot" in Greek, referring to the fact that these two body parts are merged in these animals.

5) In 2006, a UC Berkeley graduate student reported that the Indonesian Coconut Octopus, Octopus marginatus, can move along the ocean floor using only the tips of its arms, almost like "walking."

OK! Just that soak in! More to come!

Have a suggestion for the store? Well if we like the idea we will give you 10% off your next order! How about that!
